Teaching Students to Use Havruta Productively: Why Use Havruta Anyway? - Orit Kent
Abstract: In this session, participants had an opportunity to explore pedagogical approaches to teaching havruta. Orit Kent began by sharing an approach to teaching havruta developed in her own classroom, the Beit Midrash for Teachers. In this context, much of the teaching of havruta occurs through carefully crafted mini-lessons and havruta tasks, which scaffold student work in three dimensions: interpretive activity, social learning and ethical action. As a counter example, she also shared a pedagogical approach to teaching havruta developed in a 3rd grade classroom. Building off of these examples, participants had an opportunity to engage in a discussion about the purposes of using havruta in their own classrooms and ways in which their teaching can support these purposes.
